About Julius Aroba

Julius Oluwasegun Aroba is a senior lecturer and artificial intelligence expert researcher at the Centre of Ecological Intelligence, University of Johannesburg, and an Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Management and Operations at the Durban University of Technology.

In 2005, Julius embarked on his first degree, a BSc. in Computer Science and Technology, which he earned in 2009 from Crawford University, Ogun State, Nigeria. During his degree program in 2008, he interned at the Nigeria National Petroleum Chemical for six months. During this time, he also obtained certifications including the Sun Java Certified Program (SCJP) and Oracle Certified Administrator (OCA) 10G.

From 2010 to 2011, Julius was engaged by the National Youth Service Corps of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on a one-year compulsory national assignment. He was designated to lead the Information Technology Department as Aroseglinks Services Limited was newly formed in Nigeria. As the lead of the Information Technology Department, Julius spearheaded various community services relating to information technology projects, groups, and initiatives. These programs aimed to promote the expansion and accessibility of IT resources and competencies among Nigerians, close the digital gap, raise digital literacy levels, and encourage technological innovation nationwide.

Discover Julius

In 2012, Julius embarked on a Master’s in Information Technology at Coventry University, United Kingdom, and graduated in 2013. His MSc.IT thesis was titled “Implementation of ICT Infrastructure (Wide Area Network) using Crawford University as a case study”.

This research focused on setting up a Wide Area Network (WAN) over a Local Area Network (LAN) at Crawford University, utilizing private lines such as leased T1 connections. The goal was to connect different LANs over a WAN, enabling seamless data exchange across campus.

During his Master’s degree, Julius enrolled in SAP EHPs and passed the TERP 10 in 2012, further enhancing his IT skills. He also participated in the Global Leadership Program, completing courses and an exchange program in France.

From 2013 to 2018, Julius worked as a Senior IT Business and Data Analyst at Manchester Foundation Trust, where he played a crucial role in using technology and data to bridge business needs with IT solutions. His responsibilities included requirements gathering, data visualization, project management, and developing innovative solutions for continuous improvement.

After completing his studies, Julius worked as a researcher and lecturer at Coventry University for seven years, contributing to research, teaching, and academic leadership. He also pursued a Doctorate in Information at Durban University of Technology from 2020 to 2022. His Ph.D. research focused on improving node localization and energy efficiency for wireless sensor networks using hyper-heuristic optimization algorithms.

In his research, Julius proposed hyper-heuristic optimization algorithms to address intrinsic problems with node localization and energy efficiency in wireless sensor networks. This study adopted the Design Research methodology and the Theory of Modelling and Simulation as theoretical frameworks.

Julius implemented the hyper-heuristic model in a MATLAB R2020a environment, simulating different sizes of sensor networks to validate the novel technique. His research has significant implications for the Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless sensor networks.
